Review:

The REI Co-op Tarn 12 Pack for kids has been a delightful addition to our family hikes. Designed with the younger adventurer in mind, its 12-liter capacity is just right for a child's essentials: a water bottle, a light jacket, some snacks, and perhaps a small toy or two. The nylon material, while lightweight, has proven to be robust, handling the occasional rough treatment by kids without showing significant wear.

One of the most appreciated features of the Tarn 12 is its child-friendly design. The shoulder straps are adequately padded, ensuring comfort even during longer treks. The hydration compatibility is a thoughtful addition, encouraging kids to stay hydrated without the fuss of constantly reaching for a water bottle. The exterior pockets, numbering more than four, are easily accessible, allowing kids to retrieve their items without assistance. The zippers are smooth, and the pull tabs are sized just right for smaller hands.

However, while the pack is generally well-received, there are a couple of areas for improvement. The chest strap, though adjustable, could benefit from a broader range of adjustability to cater to kids of varying builds.

Water resistance is decent for light drizzles, but during a more substantial rain, the contents did get a bit damp. For those planning hikes in unpredictable weather, it might be a good idea to pack items in waterproof pouches or add a small rain cover.

Review: REI Co-op Tarn 12 Pack - Kids'

After accompanying my younger hiking companions on several trails with the REI Co-op Tarn 12 Pack designed for kids, I've gathered a comprehensive understanding of its design and performance. Here's a detailed overview based on our collective experiences:

Key Features:
The REI Co-op Tarn 12 Pack is a thoughtfully designed backpack tailored for the younger generation of hikers. Standout features include its hydration reservoir sleeve, reflective detailing for increased visibility, and a safety whistle on the sternum strap, ensuring both convenience and safety for young adventurers.

Material:
Constructed from durable nylon, the Tarn 12 is both sturdy and lightweight. This material choice ensures the pack can handle the playful rigor of kids while remaining light enough for their smaller frames.

Fit and Comfort:
Designed specifically for kids, the Tarn 12 offers a fit that's both snug and comfortable. The back panel is padded, ensuring that even when the pack is filled, it remains comfortable against a child's back. The pack's overall design ensures that weight is distributed evenly, minimizing any discomfort.

Capacity and Size:
With a 12-liter capacity, the Tarn 12 is aptly sized for young hikers. It provides just the right amount of space for essentials like snacks, a jacket, and a water bottle, ensuring that gear is organized and easily accessible.

Shoulder Straps:
The shoulder straps on the Tarn 12 are padded and adjustable. They are designed to distribute weight evenly, ensuring minimal strain on young shoulders. The straps are also contoured, ensuring a comfortable fit tailored to a child's frame.

Hip Belt:
The Tarn 12 features a simple webbing hip belt. While it's not as padded as those found on adult packs, it serves its purpose in stabilizing the pack, especially during more active pursuits.

Ventilation:
The back panel is designed with breathable materials, ensuring consistent airflow. This is particularly beneficial for keeping kids cool during warmer hikes, reducing the chances of excessive sweating.

Durability:
Given the playful nature of kids, durability is paramount. The Tarn 12 doesn't disappoint. The nylon material, combined with robust stitching, ensures that the pack can handle regular use without showing signs of wear.

Water Resistance:
While the nylon material offers some level of water resistance, it's advisable to use an additional rain cover during persistent rain to ensure the contents remain dry. This ensures that unexpected showers don't dampen the spirits of young hikers.

Organization and Access:
The main compartment is spacious and features a zipper design, ensuring easy access to gear. Inside, there are multiple pockets, allowing for efficient organization of items. This design ensures that essentials are easily reachable, even by the smallest of hands.

External Pockets:
The Tarn 12 boasts stretch mesh side pockets, perfect for water bottles or other quick-access items. Additionally, there's a front stash pocket, ideal for storing items that might be needed on the go.

The REI Co-op Tarn 12 Pack for kids is a blend of thoughtful design and functionality. Its features, combined with its comfort and durability, make it a reliable choice for parents seeking a dependable pack for their young hikers.
